Ammonia is the raw waste excreted by fish and is also a natural by-product of decomposition of dead plants, uneaten food and fish faeces. Ammonia is very dangerous to fish and will kill fish if not removed; however the degree of toxicity depends on the pH and temperature of the water. Filtration bacteria break down ammonia into less toxic Nitrite. These bacteria should be encouraged by the use of Filter Start or Trizyme Bio Start.
