Some parasite infections are clear to see. White spot can be seen by observing white spots on the skin of the fish rather like grains of salt. They can often be seen better on the fins and tail and should be visible all over the fish. White spots seen only on the gill covers may not be parasitic.
Other skin parasites can only be diagnosed by microscopic examination but symptoms can be excessive mucus, a grey layer over the skin as well as drooping fins and tail.
Many of these parasites have several stages in their life cycles and it is important to treat over several days in order to "catch" all the emerging parasites and stop re-infection.
